How are Tungsten Carbide Valve Core Machined?

Cemented carbide valve cores are a critical component widely used in high pressure, high temperature and high wear environments. Due to its extremely high hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, Cemented Carbide Spools are commonly used in fluid control, oil and gas extraction, chemical and other industries.

Widely used for applying to oil and gas system pumps, ores, mineral deposits, agriculture, construction, and surface mining tools, drilling for oil and gas or horizontal directional drilling,  excavation and circulation process of excavation and processing process. Fluid flow control in harsh conditions, the medium has a variety of components such as gas, water, oil, sand, wax, gum, asphalt, etc., with high hardness and high wear resistance.

The processing of cemented carbide valve core is a difficult material to process due to the high hardness and wear resistance of the material, so the processing technology requirements are high. Processing steps and methods of Jetvision:

1. Raw material preparation

Tungsten-cobalt tungsten carbide is usually used for cemented carbide spools. Firstly, the cemented carbide powder is mixed, pressed and molded by powder metallurgy process, and then sintered to obtain the preliminary cemented carbide blank.

2. Rough machining

In the rough machining process, the hardness of the cemented carbide has not yet reached the final strength, and it is easier to be machined. Common rough machining methods include:

Turning: When the cemented carbide is still in a relatively soft state, it can be machined by turning with a cemented carbide tool to form the initial profile of the spool.

Grinding: Rough grinding can be carried out with diamond or CBN (cubic boron nitride) grinding wheels because the high hardness of cemented carbide cannot be effectively machined by ordinary grinding wheels.

3. Sintering

After rough machining, the carbide spool needs to be sintered at high temperature. This process will make the density and hardness of the material to meet the final requirements. The sintered spool is so hard that special equipment and tools are required for the next machining steps.

4. Finishing

The sintered tungsten carbide is so hard that it cannot be machined by conventional cutting tools and therefore requires the following methods for finishing:

Precision grinding: Fine grinding with diamond grinding wheels is the main method of processing cemented carbide. Diamond grinding wheels are suitable for machining cemented carbide due to their extremely high hardness. The precision of grinding can reach a very high level, ensuring the surface quality and dimensional accuracy of the spool.

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM): For complex shapes or small parts, EDM can remove the material.EDM corrodes the metal on the surface of the workpiece through electrical discharge and is suitable for machining high hardness materials.

Laser machining: Laser machining utilizes a high-energy laser beam to cut or punch holes, and can also be used for fine machining of carbide spools.

Polishing: After grinding or other processing methods, the surface of the spool needs further polishing treatment, usually using diamond polishing paste or electrolytic polishing to improve the surface finish, reduce friction and improve the wear resistance of the spool.

5. Surface treatment

In order to further enhance the corrosion resistance and service life of cemented carbide spools, some surface treatments, such as coatings (e.g. PVD, CVD coatings), to increase the spool's wear resistance and oxidation resistance.

6. Testing and inspection

Finally, the processed and surface treated carbide spool needs to undergo strict quality inspection. Common inspection items include:

Dimensional tolerances, surface roughness, hardness testing, wear resistance testing

Challenges and key points in machining carbide valve core:

Tool selection: Super hard tools (such as carbide or PCD tools) are required for rough machining, while diamond grinding wheels are required for finishing.

Machining equipment: High-precision grinding machines, EDM machines and laser machining equipment are necessary.

Cooling and lubrication: Due to the high hardness of Cemented Carbide, a large amount of heat is generated during the grinding process, so effective cooling and lubrication measures are required to prevent the workpiece from overheating and causing processing defects.

Characteristics of Cemented Carbide valve core: high hardness, good wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, good stability

Cemented carbide spools are mainly used in the following industries and equipment:

Oil and gas industry: Cemented carbide valve cores are commonly used for valves in drilling equipment, oil recovery equipment and natural gas transmission pipelines, and can effectively cope with the challenges of high pressures, high temperatures and abrasive fluids.

Chemical industry: In pipelines and valves handling corrosive chemicals, the corrosion resistance of carbide spools is extremely important.

Mining and quarrying equipment: In mining and ore processing equipment, tungsten carbide spools are able to withstand slurries and sand, maintaining a long service life.

Power and energy: In high-temperature, high-pressure control valves used in power plants, carbide spools maintain excellent performance under extreme conditions.

Other special equipment: Cemented carbide spools are also commonly used in aerospace, marine engineering and other demanding equipment, especially in precision control components that require resistance to wear and corrosion.
